Tieto provides secure storage for E.ON Finland’s metering data
When reading electricity meters becomes automated, the volume of metering data will increase dramatically. E.ON Finland solves the lack of storage space via Tieto’s Energy Data Management (EDM) system.
More and more energy companies are transferring from manual to automatic meter reading, which means that the volume of electricity metering data will increase many times over. The old information systems are falling irrevocably behind.
Vesa Haapamäki, in charge of E.ON Finland’s electricity distribution network information system, says: “In June we signed a contract with Tieto regarding the customisation of the new EDM system.
E.ON Finland, which forms part of the international E.ON AG group, offers comprehensive services for the energy requirements of customers across Finland.
Once the new EDM system is fully deployed by mid-2006, customers who fall within the scope of the company’s automatic remote reading system will obtain even more accurate reports of their electricity use than previously.
Jarmo Holmström, director of E.ON Finland’s network unit, says: “Also, thanks to EDM the transmission, procurement and sale of electricity will be easier to predict than at present.”
Planning is crucial
“Typically, in projects carried out with Tieto, a lot of time is invested in planning. Also, the EDM system has been designed to meet future challenges as well as current ones,” says Gregor Lilius, director of E.ON Finland’s electricity unit.
The EDM system will form the core of E.ON Finland’s metering system. Its task will be to store the growing volumes of data and to refine this into a more easily processed form – with round-the-clock reliability.
The focus of development will subsequently shift outside this core, when refinement of the solutions related to the system such as remote reading and online models gets under way. “We are very satisfied, as we can continue developing EDM that forms part of our international product concept with one of the leading players in the market,” says Harri Saikkonen, Tieto.
